C.A.P.P. is an organization composed primarily of mental health professionals - psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists - practicing in the metropolitan Chicago area, who are interested in exploring and promoting psychoanalytic and psychodynamic ideas. C.A.P.P. is independent of any educational institution but reaches out to and includes students, faculty, and alumni of the three psychoanalytic training programs in the Chicago area. Our members represent the broad range of psychoanalytic thought from classical and Kleinian to the Lacanian and relational approaches.
The organization was founded by psychologists who were, at the time, excluded from and desirous of formal psychoanalytic training, but its current mission is more inclusive. C.A.P.P seeks to engage students, post-docs, and professionals at any level of interest in psychodynamic thought. We invite those who are not familiar with contemporary theory and practice to participate in our activities and learn more about the exciting developments in psychoanalytic thought over the past 110 years.
Each year the organization sponsors a Fall and a Spring Conference featuring a nationally recognized figure in the field. Many C.A.P.P. programs concern the psychoanalysis and psychotherapy of personality disorders, neurosis, and psychosis. However, from time to time the organization sponsors programs exploring the interface of psychoanalytic thought and philosophy, literature, theatre, movies, the visual arts, music, education, politics, social problems, anthropology, and neurobiology. Past speakers have included: Joanne Greenberg, Muriel Dimon, Steven Mitchell, and Joseph Lichtenberg. In addition to its major conferences, there are post- graduate courses, free continuing education programs, and social events for members. Information about upcoming programs and about becoming a member can be accessed using a button on the left of the page.
As part of its services, C.A.P.P. sponsors a referral service available to the general public. Full members are eligible to join the referral service if they meet certain requirements.
